The Songwriter Coaching Series

I’ve been invited to be one of the coaches for this songwriting series, and I was little apprehensive of how I could assist these passionate budding songwriters…. after all it’s the first time this series of workshop is run; and my partner-coach in crime was Kevin Mathews!

Kevin Mathews

Just a side note – Kevin Mathews, if you still do not know him, is a local veteran singer-songwriter, and a hit I really dig is “My One & Only”.

He also runs a music blog ‘Power of Pop‘, and recently posted a flattering review of my latest album here.

Other coaches include Don Richment, Stella Kon, Desmond Moey, Richard Lord, etc. There were some rare gems in the group that I took on, and one of them won “Best Music”, woots! Seeing them performing their works onstage, be it for the first time or not, made me nervous like a nurturing mother *gasp!*.

Sponsored by The National Library Board and COMPASS (and organised by Serendip Showbiz), we were relieved and flattered to learn that the drop-out rate for this course was very low, so we’re headed for a second run soon.

I am very envious actually, of the participants. If I had coaches during my earlier years, I probably would have churned out more and better songs, faster!

Don Richmond & I

I feel hope for the songwriting scene in Singapore, if this continues. If there is continual efforts like this in the community to foster a music scene, we will definitely be seeing our very own ‘Jason Mraz’ or ‘Rachael Yamagata’ very soon in the next 5-10 years. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
