FAQ
1. What made you decide to do music full-time?
Music has always been a calling, but coming from a conservative family, I had to get an education more economical than music. Throughout my university and working days, I was still very actively involved in music, be it performing, demo-singing, song-composing. It got to a point when I was mildly depressed. I knew I had to do nothing else but music.
2. What are your music influences?
I grew up listening to Mandarin pop and English classics way back from the 60s at the back of my dad's car. The first English cassette tape I wanted for myself was Bad by Michael Jackson when I was 10. I listen to jazz, blues, whole lot of 80s and 90s English and Mandarin pop. Singers I really dig are Sandy Lam, Penny Dai, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Silje Nergaard & Rachael Yamagata. Songwriting influences include Debbie Gibson, Mariah Carey, and the more recent Natasha Beddingfield.
3. Have you learnt singing before?
Yes. I learnt from various teachers, and realised teachers who sing well don't necessary teach well. I swear by Dr. Thomas Manhart, who patiently brought out the best of me.
4. Why do you want to sing in French and Japanese too?
I was bored. Nah just kidding. I used to sing in pubs, and having learnt Japanese in my NUS days, I was comfortable taking on requests for Japanese songs. Singing in French came natural because I took up the language.
5. Why did you choose to major psychology in university?
I have always been motivated intrinsically. I knew I didn't like to climb corporate ladders or apply laws by Einstein. Psychology seems a logical choice then. Way back when I was a shy child who blushed a lot, I had a desire to know more about human interaction and perspectives.
6. So you can read my mind?
I saw that coming, but no seriously, I can't.
